ASHER, A MUSICIAN IN SCHIEDAM
We met Asher, a passionate musician from Israel. He owns a restaurant in the center of Schiedam for 33 years already. He doesn’t only manage the business, but he also sings for his audience and organizes various events.
In Asher’s restaurant you can behold his entire life. Each small detail represents a memory from his past. Throughout life Asher has been traveling and performing all around the world. After listening to him we were really curious how come such an adventurous musician settled in a forgotten and empty town like Schiedam. Asher's life story inspired us to make a documentary. We think that he has something to tell to Schiedam.
By making this film we want to show that little realities are also very important; if something doesn’t seem appealing at first sight it doesn’t mean it can not be appealing. A city is made by communities, which are formed by individual stories of the people who live in that area instead of just the businesses or the touristic attractions you find there. We think Schiedam misses the engagement of its inhabitants. That's why we decided to delve into ones story. We chose for an unconventional form of storytelling. We used various types of found footage from different sources in order to visualize the context of the story rather than just the facts.
A documentary by Inés Elizalde, Filippo Ficozzi, Kotryna Buruckaite, Noah Suhartono.
